Kénié Hydropower Project
Support: Project Design
Document
Partner : Government of Mali, Direction Nationale de l’Energie
Contact : M. Oumar SIDIBE, Chargé de projet de barrage hydroelectrique
Project description :
The Kénié hydropower project is being developed and co-financed by the
Government of Mali, Ministry of Energy, Water and Mines, under a BOOT
scheme. The project is located on the Niger River between the cities of
Bamako and Koulikoro. A detailed feasibility, engineering, and
environmental study has been completed for the project and the Government is
currently negotiating with partners for the financing and construction of
the project. Kénié will have total power capacity of 56 MW and an average
annual generation of 178 GWh and is estimated to cost US$96.3 million (Year
2000 dollars). It will be based on a run-of-river scheme, taking advantage
of the natural topography and geology of the Niger River, using existing
rock ledges and natural channels for water flow control. The project will
afford an increase in electrification access to residential and industrial
customers in the Sikasso and Koutiala regions.
Project to Commercialize and Disseminate Low-Energy Light Bulbs
Support: Project
Information Document
Partner : ECO’HOME sarl., Imm. Koniba Niaré, rue Titi Niaré, BP 2838 Bamako
Mali.
Contact : M. Alassane TRAORE (engineer), gestionaire
Project description :
The ECO’HOME company was created in 2002. Under the framework of AMADER’s
(the Malian Rural Electrification Agency) "stratégie de l’énergie
domestique" ECO’HOME is working to disseminate and commercialize the market
for low-energy consumption light bulbs working through 14 vendor
agents in Bamako. This demonstration project targets the diffusion of
250,000 energy saving units, and seeks to establish “proof of concept” in
Mali for applying carbon investment revenue toward the market expansion of
demand-side energy efficient products and services.
SoSuMar Bagasse Cogeneration
Projects
Support: Project
Information Document
Partner : Société Sucrière de Markala/SoSuMar S.A., BP 37 Segou, Mali
Contact : Mr Harouna NIANG, gestionaire
Project description :
This public-private partnership is developing a new sugar processing plant
based on the cultivation of 15,000 hectares of irrigated lands situated
north of the Niger River about 17 Km from the town of Markala. The CDM Green
Facility is assisting the project partners to develop a PIN for a 30 MW
cogeneration plant using the bagasse waste associated with the processing of
the sugar cane. The CDM project would avoid the use of expensive, dirtier
diesel-powered generators on site, and provide for surplus clean energy for
the surrounding area. In addition, it would result in the avoidance of
powerful methane emissions from the bagasse that would have been disposed of
in the field rather than being used in the production of steam and power.
Implementation of the project is expected to result in the direct employment
of a large number of Malians for skilled work related to the plant operation
and maintenance.
